ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses sources of difference and describes the relational work of both building and ending relationships. It examines the two-way impact of such endeavours: on an emerging innovation, as well as its environment. Economic geography has a natural interest in innovation. The chapter identifies incidences of new product development occurring in or with German biotechnology companies, which involved capital investment activities in Germany. It shows that a relational economic geography of innovation processes has a particular potential to provide an integrated view on the techno-scientific and the financial value-related aspect of biotechnology innovation. German biotechnology companies are constantly searching for viable business models which allow them to attract investors and position themselves in markets. Biotechnology in Germany is a very small field, and biotechnology-related venture investment an even smaller one. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
