ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 provides a summary and application of the ludonarrative relationships in the ludonarrative model to demonstrate the utility of ludonarratology as a useful frame for game studies scholarship. This approach provides us with a frame-by-frame analysis of the players’ interaction with the gameplay, their narrative, and ludonarrative interpretations to shed light on how the game is designed to provoke a specific (emotional and cognitive) experience in the players. By studying the players’ micro interactions using the ludonarrative relationships in the ludonarrative model, we will therefore be able to understand how the gameplay and narrative work together in different ways/combinations to create myriad forms of experiences for the players. I conclude with the contributions of the model, limitations, implications, and directions for future research.
