ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on instructional strategies to support students. The part of rigor is the instructional support provided to students, or the process used to help students succeed in a differentiated classroom. There are two approaches to support: general and differentiated. General support is that which the teachers provide to their entire class to help them be successful. Differentiated support, which can be in a small group setting or for an individual, focuses on particular students. Differentiated support, which can be in a small group setting or for an individual, focuses on particular students. In a rigorous classroom, the teachers are looking for their students to demonstrate they understand what a vocabulary word means, usually through an explanation with details, examples, and elaboration. Requiring work to be completed at a satisfactory level demands that students prioritize completing the work and finding the time to meet with the teacher for additional support.
