ABSTRACT

Determining the right size of crew for a production requires that we consider what personnel is essential in each department. After reviewing the key crew positions, we consider what the smallest practical crew would be for shooting our case study project, Shoebox Redhead. Once we have ascertained our crew needs, how do we recruit people to come on board? First, it’s important to understand the concept of work-for-hire, in which people contribute their effort and ideas to a project without retaining an ownership stake in it. Next, we need to consider that the factors that persuade people to work on a production vary from one person to the next. In this context, we discuss the pros and cons of offering the same deal to all crew members and consider ways to provide extra inducements to crew members who are providing special gear or supplies along with their services.
