ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses ethical relationships and ethical decision making. It aims to help educators close sessions safely with ideas for activities that involve checking in and reviewing the curriculum and reflecting on the learning environment. There are very many different ways of designing and facilitating Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programmes, based on different theoretical and philosophical approaches. There is a wealth of international research on RSE. International research states that the most effective RSE programmes are those that adopt a rights- and gender-based approach. A key feature of high quality RSE programmes is that they are designed and developed with young people. National policy developments in the UK present new opportunities to improve the quality and quantity of RSE and to ensure that all provision is inclusive, affirmative and rights based.
