ABSTRACT

A compilation of creative writing and art exercises is available for those interested in having a curriculum and guidance for leading workshops for and with youth. Youth-led programs allowed them to create art, write, and learn. When adolescents claim their voices, they become aware of their uniqueness as part of a youth culture. Young participants are empowered—they can possess a sense of worth within a system that is designed to "correct" behaviors by stripping them of their adolescent identity and limiting their rights. Youth-led programs allowed them to create art, write, and learn. Such participation is a critical catalyst for change, a strategy with the potential to activate young individuals and provoke broader social change. If rehabilitation is a means to restore a person to "normal life" by means of education and therapy, then the use of art in education and therapy is one essential component in a healing process.
