President Obama designated Chimney Rock a National Monument on 21 September 2012.

The experience of Crow Canyon in advocating for improved public policy and from the examples of the case studies above, a few lessons learned are appropriate to share here. These practices can be used to showcase the unique economic benefi ts of cultural resources preservation in order to better advocate for improved public policies:

• Showcase the economics — Conduct or commission a study on the economic impact of the archaeological sites and cultural resources industry in your area. These studies should include the direct impacts, such as payroll and other expenditures, and indirect impacts, cultural heritage tourism expenditures, direct and indirect, and note the longer-term infl uence these sites can have on visitors.
