ABSTRACT

Woodworking was one of the most important crafts of the medieval period, embracing such trades as those of the carpenter, wheelright, millwright, and shipwright. Wooden building remained the rule during the medieval period, just as it had before, and it is of interest that even in the royal establishment as late as 1344 there were 138 carpenters against only 24 masons (Harvey 1975a, 123).
