ABSTRACT

The two basic types of medieval knife have whittle tangs inserted into handles and scale tangs with riveted handles. The terms used to describe their parts (Figure 8.1) are based, with a few amendments, on those in use in the Sheffield cutlery trade as recorded by Dyson (1936).
