ABSTRACT

This chapter explains two screen versions of the life of Santa Teresa de Avila which cross the media divide: the TV miniseries directed by Josefina Molina and starring Concha Velasco, Teresa de Jesus and the feature film directed by Ray Loriga and starring Paz Vega, Teresa, el cuerpo de Cristo. It analyses the use of mise en scene in the two works; and addresses the sometimes discordant meanings inevitably brought to the projects by the careers and personae of directors and stars. The chapter examines the extent to which the visual and narrative rhetoric of each can be derived from the distinct characteristics of their respective media. The television miniseries Teresa de Jesus was released on DVD in 2006 as part of a collection of 'classic series', a genre that was employed to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of state producer and broadcaster Television Espanola.
