ABSTRACT
The reading of 'Pisanello' in Chapter 4 stressed the incipient spatiality of this 'founding document' of Stokes's aesthetic: a sense of space rooted in the Rapallo experience of the commonality of things gathered together in a Mediterranean world wherein 'space itself was utterly revealed'. In Pisanello's art Stokes glimpsed 'the random glory of new-found space'.
