ABSTRACT
Within the catalogue, some of the identifications and discussions are by authors who are individually named. Within many of the entries there are contributions which are acknowledged in the notes, or by initials. Details on wood residues traced on some of the iron and other objects are to be found in the section on wood by J. Watson, so have been abbreviated in the catalogue entries, where they are identified by the initials 'JW'. The objects have been given a running sequence of numbers in the catalogue for ease of reference. To prevent any future confusion, the original laboratory numbers have been quoted. These were allocated when the material was first received, so several different items, if fused together, were given a single number. Some of the objects have already been published, or referred to, mostly in a brief synopsis; references in that synopsis are given, but they are effectively made obsolete by what is said in the catalogue entries.
