ABSTRACT
The prudence that Le Grand Conde had shown at Lerida came to be seen as a major element in his success on the northern frontier in the campaign of 1648, which provided the ultimate proof of his status as the consummate military leader. The Archduke, in a provocative move, marched south and took Lens against minimal resistance and Conde therefore had to decide how best to confront the enemy and prevent further loss of territory. Conde had a commanding view of the overall situation and was able to make his opponent act in the way he wished; his words put courage into his soldiers and ensured that they maintained absolute discipline. However, Conde was well aware that, in taking a decision on purely military grounds, for a hero of his stature was expected by some to conquer against all odds.
