ABSTRACT

The first contact can take place between the potential client and the coach, or both parties together with a representative of the organisation. Sometimes contact with the sponsoring organisation precedes the first meeting with the client. When an organisation “sends” an individual for coaching, it is necessary to clearly establish roles and responsibilities before the process commences. While the coach must remain highly alert, sensitive to every little detail, accessible and non-judgemental, at the same time s/he has to be setting boundaries, preparing and creating the implicit and explicit work contract out of a position of natural authority, equality and respect. When working with an individual, some coaches will establish a contract based on an hourly fee structure, similar to how clients attending private therapy are charged.
