ABSTRACT

Coaching a group differs from coaching an individual. Working with a group or a team is more demanding for the coach since each individual brings their own personal story and interests; collusions within the group as well as collusions with other groups within the organisation are possible, and many transferences and counter-transferences can be picked up. The basic idea – just as in individual coaching – is to improve the collective performance of the team as well as the performance of the individual within the team. The opening session may bring together all group members to discuss the team coaching goals. When the team head is part of the team coaching process, confidentiality regarding individual issues or individual performance can be threatened. Depending on the issues facing the team, individual coaching sessions and reflections can be added as further components with the special safeguard of confidentiality for the coach.
