ABSTRACT

Personal development is understood to be the key ingredient for individual and organisational performance. Human development is a broader term than personal development. Linked to personality and character, it entails some notion of quality and integrity, of ethics and a good heart. Some see personality as an inborn trait and character as being developed over the course of a lifetime. For want of a practical means of understanding personality, measures incorporating questionnaires and tests have been developed to structure and frame the concept. Although personality is very reluctant to change, it is often talked about in colloquial interactions and in organisational settings, yet the difficulty of such change is avoided and rarely acknowledged. A more psychodynamic approach to personality is attachment theory. Psychodynamic coaching works with the process of making conscious the content of the unconscious that can inhibit an appropriate relationship with reality.
