ABSTRACT

Trash has been useful to many artists, who proposed an anti-establishment approach to art by diverting garbage from landfill to workshop. Pablo Picasso conceived his cubist constructions from recycled wood parts and frumpy upholstery. In the long run, simple recycling only defers waste and comes at a cost, logistics being one of them. Upcycling turns one product into another product of equivalent value–for instance, by taking scraps of fabric thrown away during production and repurposing them into a collection of desirable fashion. Post-consumer waste is anything people have owned but no longer want to wear. Such old garments more often than not end up in the bin, where they will no longer reach other consumers; their ingredients won't be retrieved but will turn into pollution instead. The ways of disposing waste are among the most backward activities.
