ABSTRACT

Humans require a habitat that sustains their vital needs. One of these needs is nutrition. The production, processing, and consumption of food is influenced by numerous biological, climatic, cultural, economic, geographical, and physiological processes and rules that vary between cultures and within societies. Food systems influence what humans eat in both quantitative and qualitative terms. A food system includes all those processes that agricultural produce undergoes to transform harvested primary produce for human consumption. Food systems comprise the growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consuming and disposal of food. They also include the inputs needed and outputs generated during each sequence of the processes. This chapter proposes rethinking about the interrelations between food supply, land-use planning and urbanization in order to meet the objectives of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and their 169 targets.
