ABSTRACT

The post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia of Pope Francis issued in April 2016 is a result of his reflections on the proceedings of the two Synods of Bishops which took place in 2014 and 2015 and which looked at the topic of the family in the contemporary world. It was one of the most expected documents issued by the Vatican in recent decades. The exhortation is a lengthy document which is rich and profound. It is often written in language which is practical and easy to read; however, certain passages of the document turn out to be very difficult to interpret. Certain high-ranked officials of the Synod linked it to the event of the Second Vatican Council and stated that “the spirit of Vatican II” was present in the gatherings. This work takes this idea further and argues that “the spirit of Vatican II” can also be found in Amoris Laetitia.
