ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter examines recent developments that forensic psychologists need to respond to if the field is to remain a dynamic and proactive one. Forensic psychologists perform a diversity of roles, many of which have to be contextualised within the restrictions of legal and mental health legislation. Forensic psychologists, as part of the forensic mental health team, are involved in assessing and implementing appropriate and clinically effective treatment packages. The context of working is within the guidelines of the Mental Health Act (MHA) 2007 and Criminal Justice Act (CJA) 2003. Forensic psychologists also work within the stipulated professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and those of the Health and Care Professions Council. In 2013, the classification of psychological disorders was updated in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM)-5. The changes in DSM-5 will affect the way some individuals are assessed and diagnosed, which will ultimately impact on how offenders with specific mental health issues are considered for treatment.
