ABSTRACT
Community-focused fields, such as public health, arts policy, and comprehensive community development, and fields focused on equity and inclusion have developed extensive processes for learning about communities. The public health field is deeply engaged with learning about communities to support healthier communities, and their processes can inform people in the cultural sector. A particular area of public health research called community-based participatory research engages community members as active participants in the research process. What is equally important is to recognize that the practices that have led to this are rooted in the institutional, systemic biases that were part of most organizations' beginnings and continue to shape the organizations' internal culture. There may be people in the programs who are interested in working with museum leadership and staff to create community-focused programs that address cultural and health interests. The lessons from the field of race equity and inclusion provide a number of effective approaches to community involvement.
