ABSTRACT

Generation of power by cadmium sulfide cells fixed to the roof as solar shingles is but one aspect of Boer’s system. Like an orchestra conductor, he is trying to get all the components of a modern home, the machines that light, heat, cool, clean, wash, and entertain its dwellers to work in harmony instead of energy-wasting discord. He has calculated that the solar shingles could collect 50 percent of the sunshine falling on the roof — 5 percent as electricity and 45 percent as heat. Some of the heat would have to be vented because cadmium sulfide cells do not resist high temperatures, but the rest could be used.
