ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the experience of intercultural encounter with the use of three concepts what have been used by psychologists, and others researchers from beyond its borders. These include acculturation, biculturalism and cosmopolitanism. The chapter looks at the characteristics of and relationships between concepts which can help people to understand the psychological consequences and characteristics of intercultural encounter. Today, more people travel to meet or speak online with people from other cultures than they ever have before. The twenty-first century has seen an acceleration of a process known as intercultural encounter. Whether through tourism, travel, migration, international study or involuntary displacement, the experience of encountering people and ideas from diverse cultures is ever more common for many people.
