ABSTRACT

Teaching which aims to start where the learners are and assist them to develop a path towards competence in the learning area is presented. The nature of the learning involved is analysed and the challenges it represents for speakers of English and other European languages are identified. In planning a series of lessons, a minute of surrender listening using a news broadcast, conversation, poem, or story being read is included at the start of each so as to provide learners with a chance to reengage with the language and to subject their entire body to the flow of rhythm and intonation. Planning for effective and engaging learning opportunities means addressing the real challenges that all learners face in coming to grips with the particular characteristics of Chinese. Quality curriculum planning is an essential element for motivating and engaging students, and retaining them in the Chinese classroom.
