ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the important role student interest plays in the learning process. Many factors affect student reading and learning in the disciplines, including self-esteem, physical surroundings, emotional environment, sense of purpose, attitude toward learning, social conditions, self-determination, self-regulation, activation of interests, engagement in the learning process, and motivation. Learning, wanting to know about the world, other people, and ourselves, seems to be as natural as breathing. Learning centers offer a unique way for students to work independently or in small groups to explore resources and complete projects related to their curricular topics. Types of learning centers appropriate for content area classrooms include: listening center; viewing center; and researching center. Most teachers would agree that having a group of students who got along, trusted and respected each other, and worked collaboratively to solve real-world problems would enhance a learning environment.
