ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 takes a deeper look at four individual cases ranging from clear-cut manifestations of corruption to a journey into the gray zone. Each case is analyzed and discussed in terms of our definitions of exchange and governance corruption, and by looking at factors contributing to corruption at three levels of analysis: individual, organizational, and systemic. This approach was introduced earlier in the book (Chapters 2 and 3) but is further developed in this chapter. For each case we ask:
What caused the corruption in question
Who was involved and what motivated them
What environmental factors enabled the misconduct
Finally, we consider the linkage between corrupt acts, societal-level values, and the organizational routines that influence ethical decision making.
