ABSTRACT

Hollywood is full of scribes trying to create the write stuff; scripts that will attract the attention of top directors. Most directors are attracted to certain genres or certain themes or certain kinds of characters. Some directors are attracted to a specific style. Some directors take their cast on location so they can experience the environment in which they will work. As the script nears production, the director begins to see the movie in visual terms. The very best directors will make creative visual choices that enhance the script and breathe life into the story. Envisioning mythical confrontations and finding appropriate visual metaphors for them is at the heart of the directing process. Once the major roles have been cast, rehearsals can begin. In Hollywood, there is increasingly less rehearsal time, and its duration varies according to director preference, the availability of the actors, and countless other variables.
