ABSTRACT

Macedonia entered the transitional period with a well-defined bimodal agricultural structure and the Ministry of Agriculture has, with the aid of the World Bank, proposed a programme. This paper describes a research project aimed towards establishing the relative productivity of the two agricultural structures with a view to recommending a strategy for land and agrarian reform. The paper describes the characteristics of the two types of farming activities and makes comparisons between the farms in the private and public sectors. This study concludes that despite the many disadvantages, the small farmers are producing profitably yet in spite of the many advantages, the social sector is not. It is therefore evident that the social sector of the Macedonian agricultural industry is in need of fundamental restructuring.
