ABSTRACT

The theory behind modern tracking technologies is enormous and can fill an entire book by itself. This chapter gives a rough introduction to the three major technologies that are being used and explains their functionality. These are systems based on GPS signals, video-based systems that rely on image processing technologies, and those based on radar and microwave technology. An interview with Prof. Dr. Arnold Baca, who is an expert in the field of positional data analysis, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the three major systems used. Prof. Jürgen Perl explains some of the difficulties that still arise when collecting data and Ernst Tanner, head of the youth department of RB Salzburg, talks about data collection in one of Europe’s most advanced academies.
