ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on deprivations effected by the daily routine inside the facility and the myriad nonsensical or/and authoritarian rules that dictate it. Contrary to policy suggestions for creating normative environments for incarcerated girls, which indicate respect of their dignity and provide them with some sense of control over their bodies and their surroundings, the institution goes out of its way to create the least comfortable living space and to suppress girls’ self-expression, dignity, and self-respect. Girls are also given countless opportunities to violate rules they are not even aware of and to consequently be punished, fulfilling thus the judgment that they are “screw-ups”. The chapter is embellished throughout with examples of attacks on self-respect, control, and dignity girls have experienced prior to incarceration, and how the experience of incarceration represents a continuation of what they had lived through before.
