ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an approach to teaching that maximizes student learning while emphasizing efficiency during the years on the tenure clock. Specifically, the chapter introduces readers to the benefits of active learning for both students and faculty. The chapter provides suggestions for getting started teaching for pre-tenure faculty with limited teaching experience, including tips for how to prepare for class. The chapter also discusses key teaching issues such as class policies, managing the first day of class, creating inclusive classrooms, student feedback and grading, and student evaluations to provide specific advice for preparing for teaching that will benefit students and provide evidence for a candidate’s case for tenure.
