After treating the notion of integrity within the chain of equipment from microphone to loudspeaker, the chapter explains basic concepts and terminology associated with analog and digital sound. A discussion of signal flow leads to considerations of the digital representation of analog voltage, pulse code modulation, sampling, quantization, and dither.
