ABSTRACT

A number of strategies for producing realistic stereo playback images are considered in this chapter, and a discussion of the cues (intensity and time of arrival) listeners use to locate sound on a horizontal plane precedes examination of both phantom images and the mic placement techniques that will localize sound sources appropriately on the playback plane between two loudspeakers. The chapter discusses the principles of using coincident pairs (X-Y, Blumlein, Mid-Side), near-coincident arrays (ORTF, NOS, DIN, OSS), and spaced microphones (A-B, Faulkner Phased Arrays, Decca Tree) in relation to angle of incidence, phase information, and playback image.
