ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of television and of digital media, including online games, advertising and the internet. It explores the benefits, such as information gathering, social networking and leisure pursuits, as well as the risks, such as cyberbullying, exposure to offensive material, grooming and manipulation by commercial interests. The chapter outlines knowledge to enhance safer use of the internet and new online technologies. The media and the new technologies have become an everyday part of the lives of young people. Television offers a diversity of programmes for all ages, featuring news, documentaries, sports and arts performances, nature programmes and child-friendly games and activities. Violent video games have been shown to increase aggressive thoughts, physiological arousal and aggressive behaviour while decreasing empathic feelings for others and pro-social behavior. Television can play an important part in the child’s development and has widespread educational influence.
