ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out to describe the integrated feedback system which the authors have evolved for use in student try-out. Observations are concerned with collecting data on what actually happens, in the present context when learning materials are tried out on students. The measurement approach to evaluation involves a heavy reliance on scores and other indices that can be manipulated mathematically or statistically. Superimposed on the well-established tradition of educational measurement, a far-reaching development in evaluation theory was Tyler's call for evaluation to be linked with the specification of instructional objectives. Advocates of individual try-out have approached most closely what might be called pure concurrent data collection, encouraging students to generate an almost continuous stream of data while they are studying. The performance measures may exist as an integral part of the learning package being tested, or may have to be specially devised for student try-out, in the form of post-test feedback questions.
