ABSTRACT

Transdisciplinary collaboration is important to the education of secondary students with autism. Transdisciplinary education involves collaboration among professionals that integrates perspectives of multiple disciplines to connect new knowledge and deeper understanding to real-life experiences. This chapter examines important issues pertaining to transdisciplinary teams, beginning with the importance of involving students and promoting self-advocacy and self-determination. The chapter examines the important roles that parents and family members play in transdisciplinary teams, and overviews person-centered planning as a means to further engage families. Roles of professionals, including not only educational and therapeutic professionals but also professionals from adult services and supports, are discussed.
