ABSTRACT

This chapter presents brief overviews of 16 universities from around the world that are implementing Lean Higher Education (LHE). LHE initiatives continued without university-wide adoption or centralized support. LHE structured problem-solving recommendations led to 6% increase in Fall-to-Fall semester retention. In 2012, the Sustainable Futures initiative was moved to the Director of Finance, Planning, and Commercial Services, and two staff members with expertise in Lean in higher education and six sigma were hired to lead the University-wide Lean initiatives. Edinburgh Napier University continued to evolve its Lean program in 2017, with Information Services/Sustainable Futures staff redeployed in a Business Improvement Program, within a University-wide portfolio of six change programs. The Business Improvement Program has prioritized a number of process improvement interventions, using a model adapted from the University of St Andrews. Lean has continued to evolve at the University, successfully adapting to institutional leaders, goals, and culture over time.
