ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the application of Lean Higher Education (LHE) to the central academic processes of higher education: teaching and curriculum, research and its application/transfer, and service/outreach. It explores academic processes related to scholarly or creative activities and service or outreach. While the extent of waste in academic processes related to teaching and curriculum is unknown, a conservative estimate is that 50% or more of any process is waste. An academic process that moves steadily and predictably without interruption according to the needs of the beneficiary demonstrates good flow. Course lectures, homework, and tests are prescheduled by the professor to ensure that the course is completed and grades turned into the university Registrar by the required date. Waste and impediments to flow in teaching and curriculum processes have a significant impact on the broader educational experience of students. LHE provides a problem-solving approach that all faculty can use to continuously improve teaching and curriculum processes.
