ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the question how the diffusion and use of visual media is related to reflexive processes in the development and dissemination of knowledge forms the point of departure. It illustrates this by juxtaposing my fieldwork experiences with different ways in which the concept of reflexivity is used. Visualisation, subject-orientation, and reflexivity are all concepts covering contexts that become evident when working with different forms of documentary film. In politics, self-presentation may be based on avoiding humiliation and become historically remembered as someone who kept the moral flag flying. Ethical reflexivity is a tool in defining communication and actions regarding the relationship between informants and partners, script writing, and the actual filming during interviews in the research stage of a project. Fieldwork contains reflexive dialogues between all actual participants and a future audience as well. It is in the multiple dialogues between people that the production of knowledge takes place.
