ABSTRACT

A planned positive experience teaching students with visual impairments can improve a person's ability to teach these unique students. Two major organizations assist athletes who have visual impairments: the United States Association for Blind Athletes and the International Blind Sports Federation. Visual impairments, including blindness, are described by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as impairments in vision that even with correction adversely affect a student's educational performance. The role of an educational interpreter is to facilitate communication between persons who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing and others, such as teachers, service providers, and peers within the educational environment. While there is often a tendency for caregivers to focus on the medical aspects of deafblindness, physical educators can help parents begin to focus on quality of life issues for their child with deaf blindness. Among Deaf students, approximately two thirds have congenital deafness and one third have acquired deafness.
