ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), including history, prevalence, etiology, teaching considerations, and communication options. Because ASDs range from mild to severe, differentiated instruction is vital to the success of a learning environment that includes individuals with ASDs. Visuals used in an adapted physical education gymnasium should include at least one—and ideally many different—communication methods, such as Picture Exchange Communication System boards, video modeling, or social story books. It is vital to choose activities that are appropriate for a student's developmental level and that allow each student to participate and be successful. Age appropriateness is also important so that students participate in activities that will facilitate their success. Before beginning a new job in an unfamiliar area, a prepared physical educator should research the options for physical activity within the community. Knowledge of families' physical activity interests is another asset to the physical educator.
