W as m usic notated at R om e before the St C ecilia gradual, finished

in 1071, was begun? If so (as seem s likely), does the com m on wis-

dom hold true th at no exam ples of such notation have survived?1 And if a search through sacram en taries , lectionaries, evan-

geliaries, bibles and hom iliaries w ritten in urban and suburban

R om e before 1071 should disclose bits of such notation , w hat would

they reveal? An earlier stage of m usic w riting indigenous to R om e,

or a borrowed technique recently im ported? And if borrowed,

borrow ed from w here?
