ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines how DIY festival promotion under the banner of Ladyfest has opened up new performance spaces to women performers and audience members, as well as acting as a way to endorse and encourage the activities of women within the creative arts. The creation of new songs, adoption of novel performance techniques, and introduction of unconventional instruments and technologies pushes at and stretches the defining boundaries of the genre. The detailed analysis of indie rock music is also instructive as it demonstrates the complex discourses operating in the production and mediation of particular music genres. Consideration has been given to different aspects of rock, including its institutions and performance sites, which impact on how female performers experience the rock environment and are in turn understood by a rock audience.
