ABSTRACT

An historical figure (1156-1217) who reigned 1190-1217. He was not in fact the uncle of the historical Elisabeth, but father of Elisabeth's husband, Ludwig IV of Thuringia. He presided over the famous song contest at the Wartburg in 1207 which neither the historical Elisabeth (born 1207), nor the historical Tannhäuser (born 1200) could have attended. The Landgrave stipulated that each contestant should sing in praise of the most benevolent monarch known to him.
