ABSTRACT

This chapter contains action-centred leadership model; the principles on which it is based; underlying assumptions; guidance on application, and relevant issues; and related models. Appreciation of the model's principles helps the manager to consider and encourage balanced leadership. When leading a group of people, it is important for the leaders to consider task needs, individual needs and group maintenance needs. Although they overlap, group, individual and task needs are distinct. A good leader is able to move between the three elements effectively, achieving a balanced approach. The model's elements may be used to assess the effectiveness of managers and leaders. They may also be employed when appraising staff in relation to their ability to perform a task and work with others. The model may be applied at levels other than the primary, team level - for example, at organizational or business unit levels.
