ABSTRACT

This chapter contains group development model; the principles on which it is based; underlying assumptions; guidance on application, and relevant issues; and related models. Groups mature arid develop through five stages of growth: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. A group forms either naturally, by means of sharing a common purpose or interest, or it may be formed artificially for a particular task. An effective group leader will recognize the dynamics at each stage and adapt his or her leadership style to the needs of individuals and the group whilst carrying out the task. The model helps leaders and group members to develop an understanding of their different personal attitudes and behaviours as a group develops. The model helps leaders consider the most appropriate leadership styles for different stages in group development. The model is an aid to understanding and managing both general organizational change and group changes.
