ABSTRACT

This chapter contains managerial grid; the principles on which it is based; underlying assumptions; guidance on application, and relevant issues; and related models. The managerial grid plots a manager's style in terms of concern for people versus concern for production, which can be measured using a diagnostic questionnaire. Although the two concerns can be evaluated independently of one another on the axes, in this model they form a grid and are used interdependently. The task management style may lead to higher productivity in the short term but lower morale and lower productivity in the long term. The managerial grid is based on a one-person/one-style belief, called a dominant approach. Each manager has his or her own grid style which may or may not be applicable in all situations. A particular style may be most appropriate at particular times and in particular circumstances.
