ABSTRACT
The British nation had at this time two representatives in the dominions of the king of Sicily, Mr Chamberlain, the consul at Messina, and Mr Allen, the consul-general residing in the metropolitan city of Naples. Chamberlain was the nearest; but Allen was the superior and more influential. Add to which, the good that was to be done must be done at the court of the monarch. I hastened to Naples.
