ABSTRACT

Having changed my mind respecting the immediate disposal of my prisoner, I resolved to have him brought before Mr. M—d, who had backed my warrant, in order to get him fully committed. I was the more anxious for this as I did not like to undertake the responsibility of escorting him to Guildford, where it would be requisite he should be tried for the kidnapping affair. He had done enough, I was convinced, in Hampshire, to afford ample grounds for his committal in this county, ensure me the proclaimed reward, and, what was no less important, secure to poor Thady that share of it with which he meant to achieve so many wonders in the way of Irish comforts. I had other reasons, besides, which may appear as I proceed in the narrative.
