ABSTRACT

For the rest of that day she was restless and miserable; her nerves strained. She listened to every sound, longing to hear the cry that would remind her of Dollie, fearing lest the voice would pierce her heart. Evening found her still on the rack. She moved from room to room telling herself she could not go down to Mrs. Markham, and yet unable to settle to anything. She unlocked the box in which she kept Dollie’s clothes, and looked through them yearningly. It was like opening the grave, and brought back the heaviness of heart she had suffered. She longed with a terrible longing to have her baby again.
